Almost one in five parents never check their children for head lice, the results of a new survey have found.

Head lice are insects that live on the human scalp and the eggs laid by female head lice are known as nits. They are extremely common - most children will get them at least once or twice. Around 80% of head lice infestations occur in children between the ages of four and 16.

Despite this, the survey found that almost 20% of parents never check their children for head lice, while around half would be ‘very’ or ‘quite’ embarrassed if their child had them.

Furthermore, despite efforts on the part of many schools to control the problem, one in four parents say they have never received any communication about head lice from their child’s school.

Pharmacist, Darragh O’Loughlin, described the results of the research as ’somewhat worrying, as one of the keys to effectively managing the problem is for parents to check their child’s hair regularly.

“It’s a very common problem so no parent should feel embarrassed about it. And as infestations commonly occur in schools, it is essential that schools inform parents of any suspected cases in their school in an effort to control the problem”, Mr O’Loughlin said.

The research was carried out on behalf of Hedrin.

The U.S. government’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offers steps for returning your household to normal after the head lice have arrived. The most important step in fighting a head-lice infestation is to treat the person and other family members with head lice with medication to kill the lice. Wash clothing and bedding worn or used by the infested person in the two-day period just before treatment is started.

Nut Swamp students will make up missed time on Election Day
MIDDLETOWN - Numerous cases of head lice in children at Nut Swamp School forced the school to close for one day recently.

According to Township Health Officer Stephen McKee, his office was notified on Sept. 29, a day after students were screened.

“They found a high number of cases of head lice and decided it was best to shut the school for the day as a precaution,” McKee said.

The following day, five public health nurses were on hand to check students on their way into the school, along with School District Supervisor of Safety Ken Walls. Walls did not return phone calls made to his office for comment on this story.

Following the incident, the district put the following statement on its Web site: “Decontamination procedures appropriate to stop the spread of head lice have been conducted by the district’s facilities staff. Additional nursing staff will be assigned to Nut Swamp School to assist with the process of checking hair upon entry into the building. Tuesday, Nov. 7 is the tentative makeup date for today’s school closing, pending approval by the Board of Education at the October regular voting meeting.”

Calls to school nurse Lucille Orchanian and Principal Anne Facendo were referred to the district’s administration. Multiple messages left for Interim Superintendent Karen Bilbao and Schools Business Administrator/

Board Secretary William J. Doering were not returned.

As for ways to prevent head lice, McKee offered some simple solutions.

Also, mostly with boys, they wear the same baseball hat day after day after day and that’s not good either.”
